HOW TO BREAK BAD HABITS AND START GOOD ONES

Replace bad habits with good habits. It is far too difficult to simply pull bad habits without replacing the needs they were put in place to fulfill in the first place. Giving up television or surfing the Internet might mean you need to find new ways to relax, socialize, or get information.

Remove as many triggers as possible. If you smoke when you drink, then don’t go to the bar. If you eat cookies when they are in the house, throw them all away and stop buying them. Make it easier on yourself to break bad habits by avoiding the things that trigger them.

Focus on one habit at a time. If you try to change more than one habit at a time, chances are it won’t stick.

Work on establishing one good habit for thirty days. After that time, it has been sufficiently conditioned to become a part of a healthy lifestyle. This positive ritual helps to establish the automatic programs running in the background of your mind.

Join forces with somebody. How often do you try to diet in private? Instead, pair up with someone and quit together. The two of you can hold each other accountable and celebrate victories together. Knowing that someone else expects you to be better can be a powerful motivator.

We often think that to break our bad habits, we need to become entirely new people. The truth is, it’s very unlikely you’ve had these bad habits all of your life. You don’t need to quit smoking; you just need to return to being a nonsmoker. You don’t need to transform into a healthy person; you just need to return to being healthy. You have already lived without this bad habit, so you can definitely do it again.

Don’t punish yourself for being human. Everybody slips up every now and then. Slipping up doesn’t make you a bad person; it makes you human. So rather than beating yourself up over it, shake it off and get back on track . . . quickly.

Breaking bad habits takes time and effort, but mostly it takes perseverance. Most people who end up breaking their bad habits try and fail multiple times before they make it work. You might not have success right away, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have it at all.

Perhaps the most striking aspect of the Ark was the demographic of the residents. There was a musician, a nurse, an artist, a cowboy, a boutique owner, a professional cyclist, a florist, an attorney, three teenagers, and three women who were mothers just like me. I learned really fast that addiction does not discriminate. There is no “type.” I was in the minority when it came to my addiction among the women: Most were addicted to prescription medications and some to illegal drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin. But regardless of the substance, all of us there were abusing some sort of drug to numb our pain.

The group therapy sessions could be brutal.
